A tie for Gravity and 12 Years A Slave at the 2014 PGAs

Last night, amid the hustle and bustle of awards season, the less popular, but equally revered among the film industry, Producers Guild Awards (PGAs) took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in California.

While the fashion and A-list celebrity took a back seat this time around, the PGAs takes time out to celebrate the producers and visionaries responsible for bringing films from an idea to the big-screen.

The biggest news from last night was that for the first time in history there was a tie in the ‘Theatrical Motion Picture’ category. Both Gravity and 12 Years A Slave walked home with an award.

While that is great news to these producers, it throws a spanner in the works when it comes to predicting the Oscars which are announced in March.

Normally, around this time in the award season a front-runner has usually established itself, this year is the exception. Gravity has enjoyed huge oscar buzz since September, but has more recently lost out to 12 Years a Slave at the Golden Globes.

In the meantime, the hugely successful, American Hustle, directed by David O Russell was crowned winner at the Golden Globes (this time for Best Motion Picture (Comedy)) and also received the same award more recently at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

All these awards including, The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Producers Guild Awards and the Critics Choice Awards, are all an indicator to the most revered awards, The Academy Awards.

While in the past it can be seen that one film has dominated awards season all the way to the Oscars. But the big bash that takes place on 1 March this year, is sure the throw up some huge surprises.

What this means is that this year is the most exciting and unpredictable awards season.

  • Each Golden Globe Award is individually hand-finished and presented in red velvet lined, leather bound chest with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association logo stamped in gold.
  • It has a 24-karat gold-plated zinc die cast top.
  • Society awards redesigned the statuette in 2008 to give it a new marble base and adjust the metal top to improve durability and aesthetics.
  • The top of the award is a globe wrapped in a film strip.
  • The marble for the stand is sourced from Europe and each individual award is hand carved to perfection.

Taking inspiration from Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ the hat represents the new age of Disney Hollywood Studios

On January 5th, Bradley Cooper and January Jones were born in 1975 and 1978 respectively. For those who are slow on the maths side of things that makes Cooper, star of Silver Linings Playbook and the highly anticipated American Hustle, 39 years old tomorrow. And January Jones, star of the hit show, Mad Men will turn 36.

In 2010, the box office flop Did You Here About The Morgans? starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant hit UK cinemas. Grossing only £50 million worldwide, this movie definitely didn’t kick 2010 cinema off to a good start.

American Psycho starring our beloved Batman, Christian Bale, premiered in 2000 at the annual Sundance Film Festival.

The eighth most-popular theme park in the world changed its name on January 5th 2008 to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. For almost 15 years, the theme park was known as Disney-MGM Studios. The theme park takes inspiration from the heyday of Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. The name change was done to reflect ‘how the park has gone from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today’s Hollywood has to offer’.

7 books, 8 films and over £5billion at the global box office; Harry Potter is a global phenomenon. The book series have become the most successful movie franchise in history and the eight films have amassed a huge fortune as well as merchandise, a theme park and a film studios tour.

For over 10 years, Leavesden Film Studios was the home the Hogwarts, Privet Drive and the Ministry of Magic. This really is the place where the ‘magic’ took place, from creating those adrenaline-filled Quidditch matches to the action packed battle over Hogwarts.

Now fans from all around the world have the chance to step behind-the-scenes and into the ‘Warner Bros. Studios Tour London’.

From set design to costumes, props to visual effects, this tour has everything. The attraction, takes up to 5,000 visitors on a journey throughout the 10 years of filmmaking.

Sarah Roots, Vice President of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, commented: “What makes the Tour so special is that everything on show has been used in the making of the Harry Potter film series. All the sets, props and costumes are authentic and show the incredible detail and craftsmanship that goes into film production. All the films were shot at Leavesden so it’s wonderful to have given the sets a permanent home here.”

Once visitors are welcomed to the tour they are transported through the large golden doors and into The Great Hall.

Here they can walk around this iconic room, see the tables set ready for dinner, and stare in awe at Dumbledore’s cloak.

After the Great Hall, visitors are set free to explore plethora of sets and props and immerse themselves in the magical world behind the scenes.

Take your picture in front of the full-size gates of Hogwarts, step inside Dumbledore’s office and explore the Weasley’s kitchen complete with the self-knitting scarf and the saucepans that clean themselves.

Visitors are given free reign to explore the sets, there is no time limit and you can spend as long as you want to soak up all the magic.

The makers of the tour haven’t missed a thing, as you walk through the tour you are able to walk through Diagon Alley and knock on the door of No. 4 Privet Drive.

Every step along the way offers a new and exciting aspect of production. Props, costumes, sets and vehicles (of course that includes the brooms) you can take an in-depth view of how the team of artists, builders, makeup artists and costume designers created the magic.

For those who wonder how they built the wizarding world, you are able to view each and every scale model used throughout production. Have you ever thought how film crews begin with designing sets as large as the Ministry of Magic? Well now you can see how, from the first sketches all the way to the full size sets, you can see the whole production process.

There are many secrets and surprises that can be found along the way. For any Harry Potter fan this is a must-see and even for those that are simply interested in the method of producing those blockbusters. The Warner Bros. Studios Tour is one-of-a-kind and the most comprehensive attraction for any film lover.
